Could asteroid dust counter climate change?

To combat global warming, scientists in Scotland now suggest an out-of-this-world solution ? a giant dust cloud in space, blasted off an asteroid, which would act like a sunshade for Earth.

The world is warming and the climate is changing. Although many want to prevent these shifts by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases that trap heat from the sun, some controversially suggest deliberating manipulating the planet's climate with large-scale engineering projects, commonly called geoengineering.

Instead of altering the climate by targeting either the oceans or the atmosphere, some researchers have suggested geoengineering projects that would affect the entire planet from space. For instance, projects that reduced the amount of solar radiation Earth receives by 1.7 percent could offset the effects of a global increase in temperature of 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius).

The United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has noted that climate models suggest average global temperatures will rise by 2 to 11.5 degrees F (1.1 to 6.4 degrees C) by the end of this century.

"A 1.7 percent reduction is very small and will hardly be noticeable on Earth," said researcher Russell Bewick, a space scientist at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland. "People sometimes get the idea of giant screens blocking the entire sun. This is not the case ... as [the device] is constantly between the sun and the earth, it acts merely as a very light shade or filter."

Shading Earth
One proposal to shade Earth from the sun would place giant mirrors in space. The main problem with this concept is the immense cost and effort needed either to build and launch such reflectors or to construct them in outer space ? the current cost to launch an object into low Earth orbit runs into thousands of dollars per pound. Another would use blankets of dust to blot out the sun, just as clouds do for Earth. These offer the virtue of simplicity compared with mirrors, but run the risk of getting dispersed over time by solar radiation and the gravitational pull of the sun, moon and planets. [Top 10 Craziest Environmental Ideas]

Now, instead of having a dust cloud floating by itself in space, researchers suggest that an asteroid could essentially gravitationally anchor a dust cloud in space to block sunlight and cool the planet.

"I would like to make it clear that I would never suggest geoengineering in place of reducing our carbon emissions," Bewick told LiveScience. Instead, he said, "We can buy time to find a lasting solution to combat Earth?s climate change. The dust cloud is not a permanent cure, but it could offset the effects of climate change for a given time to allow slow-acting measures like carbon capture to take effect."

Flash graphic: Ideas for a cooler planet

The idea would be to place an asteroid at Lagrange point L1, a site where the gravitational pull of the sun and the Earth balance each other to keep an object in a relatively stable orbit. This point is about four times the distance from Earth to the moon.

The researchers suggest outfitting a near-Earth asteroid with a "mass driver," a device consisting of electromagnets that would hurl asteroid-derived matter away from the giant rock. The mass driver could serve both as a rocket to push the asteroid to the L1 point and as an engine to spew out sun-shielding dust. [5 Reasons to Care About Asteroids]

The researchers calculate that the largest near-Earth asteroid, 1036 Ganymed, could maintain a dust cloud large enough to block out 6.58 percent of the solar radiation that would normally reach Earth, more than enough to combat any current global warming trends. Such a cloud would be about 11 quadrillion pounds (5 quadrillion kilograms) in mass and about 1,600 miles (2,600 kilometers) wide.

Ganymed has a mass of about 286 quadrillion pounds (130 quadrillion kilograms). An asteroid of this size might make one think of disaster movies, such as "Armageddon"; however, "rather than destroying the Earth, it could be used to help mankind," Bewick said.

Asteroid dust challenges
The main challenge of this proposal would be pushing an asteroid the size of Ganymed to the sun-Earth L1 point.

"The company Planetary Resources recently announced their intention to mine asteroids," Bewick said. "The study that they base their plans on reckons that it will be possible to capture an asteroid with a mass of 500,000 kilograms (1.1 million pounds) by 2025. Comparing this to the mass of Ganymed makes the task of capturing it seem unfeasible, at least in everything except the very far term. However, smaller asteroids could be moved and clustered at the first Lagrange point."

Safety is another concern.

"A very large asteroid is a potential threat to Earth, and therefore great care and testing would be required in the implementation of this scenario," Bewick said. "Due to this, the political challenges would probably match the scale of the engineering challenge. Even for the capture of much smaller asteroids, there will likely be reservations from all areas of society, though the risks would be much less."

Also, there's no way to fully test this dust cloud on a large scale to verify its effectiveness before implementing it, "something that is common to all geoengineering schemes," Bewick said. "On the global scale, it is not possible to test because the test would essentially be the real thing, except probably in a diluted form. Climate modeling can be performed, but without some large-scale testing, the results from these models cannot be fully verified."

Still, if geoengineers did use asteroids to generate clouds, they could drastically reduce how much dust the projects spew out "should any catastrophic climate response be observed," Bewick said, "with the cloud dispersing naturally over time."

The scientists will detail their findings in the Nov. 12 issue of the journal Advances in Space Research.

What exactly does sync mean? - Family Tree Maker software ...

I have FTM 2012 Version 21.0.0.704. My tree is linked to its online version on Ancestry and set to update linked trees automatcally. But what does this mean? Example: on my home PC I added a spouse to an existing person and then added three children. I also added citations and media. When I was done, the syncing box appeared -- but when I looked at the online tree a couple of days later the spouse wasn't there, the children weren't there, the citations weren't there and the media weren't there. So what exactly does sync mean? The only way I have found to get my online tree in line with the tree on my PC is to delete it and then upload again.

Lack of sleep leads to insulin resistance in teens

ScienceDaily (Sep. 29, 2012) ? A new study suggests that increasing the amount of sleep that teenagers get could improve their insulin resistance and prevent the future onset of diabetes.

"High levels of insulin resistance can lead to the development of diabetes," said lead author Karen Matthews, PhD, of the University of Pittsburgh Department of Psychiatry. "We found that if teens that normally get six hours of sleep per night get one extra hour of sleep, they would improve insulin resistance by 9 percent."

The study, appearing in the October issue of the journal Sleep, tracked the sleep duration and insulin resistance levels of 245 healthy high school students. Participants provided a fasting blood draw, and they kept a sleep log and wore a wrist actigraph for one week during the school year. Sleep duration based on actigraphy averaged 6.4 hours over the week, with school days significantly lower than weekends.

Results show that higher insulin resistance is associated with shorter sleep duration independent of race, age, gender, waist circumference, and body mass index. According to Matthews, the study is the only one in healthy adolescents that shows a relationship between shorter sleep and insulin resistance that is independent of obesity.

The authors concluded that interventions to promote metabolic health in adolescence should include efforts to extend nightly sleep duration. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine reports that most teens need a little more than nine hours of sleep each night.

Calif. kids' football team hit with bounty scandal

(AP) ? The league president and head coach of a children's football team in Orange County have been suspended amid allegations that players were offered bounties to knock opponents out of games.

The executives presided over last year's Tustin Junior Pee Wee Red Cobras, a team of mainly 10- and 11-year-olds.

The Orange County Register (bit.ly/OsCHwh) says a group of parents alleges that head coach Darren Crawford and an assistant coach offered players cash for getting big hits and for knocking rivals out of playoff games last season. One player suffered a mild concussion.

National Pop Warner officials say Crawford and Tustin President Pat Galentine have been suspended until the program investigates the allegations and issues a ruling.

Crawford, Galentine and former assistant coach Richard Bowman have denied the allegations.

Arthur Conan Doyle's whaling venture

The surgeon aboard the whaling vessel Hope was often covered in the blood of seals and other animals, his clothes frozen enough that he'd have to stand next to the ship's stove to thaw before undressing.

A first-time sailor, he wasn't supposed to take part in the clubbing of seals, but he did, and repeatedly fell into the frigid waters, nearly freezing to death.

A journal by the young man, written at age 20 in 1880, was published yesterday. ?The ?author? ?Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Best known for creating the ingenious detective Sherlock Holmes, Doyle was first a surgeon, and went along on the whaling ship after a friend of his backed out, according to a review of the book by the Daily Mail.

The journey was intense and bloody, and the sailors' job was to take as many seals and whales as possible. As noted by the Smithsonian, though, Doyle's journal of the trip isn't all blood and gore, and contains Doyle's neat prose and lovely illustrations of the ship and the terrain it explored in the Arctic Ocean. ?

The killing of whales was common at the time, although Doyle did write about his feelings of sympathy for the hunted animals. He also describes the beauty of the icy landscape and awe he felt upon seeing enormous humpback whales, which the sailors didn't hunt because they contained too little oil to make their capture worthwhile. Whale oil was valuable for its use in lamps, candle wax and other applications.

Doyle wrote about his experience in both fiction and nonfiction, which helped him first catch the eye of publishers. Although he completed medical school and briefly practiced as a surgeon, he soon realized his true talent lay in writing.

The account of his Arctic voyage is called "Dangerous Work: Diary of an Arctic Adventure" (British Library Publishing, 2012) and is available from the British Library Shop.

Personal Bankruptcy: Developing A Plan That Works For You

Posted on Sep 28, 2012 in Credit Score | Comments Off

Many people are quick to judge others badly when they have to declare bankruptcy, yet they are also as quick to change their mind if they are suddenly in that boat. A simple change of circumstances, such as job loss, can quickly change a life to the point where bankruptcy may be the only way out. If you find yourself in this situation, the below article will assist you.

When deciding to file bankruptcy, do not feel ashamed of your situation. Most people feel like a failure and get depressed when they file. After you consider all the factors involved and determine that this is your only solution, then try to convince yourself that this is actually a positive first step in securing your financial future.

Check your bankruptcy papers to make sure they are accurate. Although you might have an attorney that fills out and files your paperwork, it?s your responsibility to check if all the information is accurate. Bear in mind that a lawyer deals with many cases and there is always a chance of a screw up. It?s important you ensure there are no mistakes, and that any paperwork being filed for you is accurate.

Before going through the Chapter 7 filing process, ensure that your co-debtors are abreast of any implications relating to this process. When filing Chapter 7, you are not longer liable for the debts that you and a co-debtor signed for. Although, your creditors may insist that the co-debtor pay off the entire debt.

Never take huge cash advances directly from your credit cards before you file for bankruptcy, since you know that all debts will be erased from these cards. If a creditor notices that activity they can constitute it as fraud and sue to have you pay it all back even after your bankruptcy is complete.

You may have your case dismissed because of errors. Normally you can re-file in this case. But, generally speaking, the automatic stay will apply for 30 days only if you have already received a prior dismissal. You might be able to push the case off for a bit if the judge sees good cause in the error you made and sees that you refiled.

Be sure everything is clear to you about personal bankruptcy via looking at websites on the subject. The United States Department of Justice, NACBA, and American Bankruptcy Institute websites are all great places to go for up-to-date information. As with everything in life, the more you know about filing a claim, the better off you?ll be. You can properly prepare when you know what you?re preparing for.

Before you make the final decision to file bankruptcy, consider the other options you have. Perhaps credit counseling can resolve your issues. There are a lot of organizations that are non-profits and can assist you. Their job is to lower your payments and interest through negotiations with your creditors. They collect payments from your and then pay the creditors.

Be as honest as you possibly can when filing for bankruptcy; hiding liabilities or assets will only hurt you in the long run. Wherever you file, that court has to be made aware of all details regarding your finances, positive and negative. Don?t withhold information, and create a smart way of coping with the reality of the situation.

You need to tell your bankruptcy attorney about all of your financial obligations, even small ones. You probably know that you need to disclose consumer debt and medical debt, but you might not realize this means you need to disclose any debt you owe individuals, as well, even family.

Make sure to come out of the bankruptcy better informed and better able to handle your finances. Having large medical bills is an understandable cause of financial difficulties, but if you have an issue with shopping too much, you may have more trouble ahead. You may need more help that a bankruptcy lawyer can provide if you are constantly spending money that you don?t have.

If you?ve already tried everything you can think of to dig out of your financial mess, it might be time for bankruptcy. You need not feel guilty about your financial situation if the choices that have put you in it were made by other people. You can find the information that you need in the article below.

My Garden Diaries: garden inspiration

?I have always loved gardens. ?From as far back as I can remember, I would plan and think about garden designs. ?Growing up in Chicago, I remember going to my great-aunt's home for family parties. ?Your typical Chicago bungalow filled with lively Italians and FOOD! ?What struck me when I was a child was Aunt Tina's garden. ?With a cannoli in hand, I followed my cousins out the back door and was mesmerized by what I saw. ?Tall brick walls inclosed the small Chicago lot. ?Beautiful vines creeping up the old brick and large statues throughout the garden surrounded by flowers and greenery. ?A formal design with many of the same characteristics as the garden below.

I knew at that moment, that I wanted an enchanted garden when I grew up. ?

Happy National Chocolate Milk Day! | WTVR.com ? Richmond News ...

chocolate_milk

It?s a day adults and children can be excited about? Thursday, September 27, is National Chocolate Milk Day!

The delicious drink was invented by Sir Hans Sloane in 1687. Sloane was a doctor and praised the ?health giving? qualities of chocolate milk.

His other claim to fame was succeeding Sir Isaac Newton as President of the Royal Society in Britain.

According to the National?Chocolate?Milk day site, drinking chocolate was fairly uncommon until the 1820s because no one knew how to produce a smooth chocolate taste in liquid form.

In 1828 the Van Houten company in Amsterdam invented the cocoa pressing method, which created a?light, fluffy chocolate powder that would dissolve in water or milk.

National Coffee Day is coming up soon?this Saturday, Sept. 29.

Food for thought: Do family meals really make a difference for child academics or behavior?

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? A shared meal has consistently been valued for its social and health benefits -- it's recognized as a door to academic excellence and as the ceremonial event that helps cement family relationships, no matter how you define "family." However, a new study co-authored by Boston University School of Social Work Assistant Professor Daniel P. Miller has found that the perceived benefits may not be as strong as once thought.

Despite popular wisdom and findings from much previous research that suggests the beneficial impact of family mealtime, a rigorous analysis of 21,400 children, ages five to 15, brings a new argument to the table: When researchers controlled for a host of confounding factors, they didn't find any relationship between family meals and child academic outcomes or behavior.

"We find no relationship between family breakfasts or family dinners and any child outcomes -- reading, math and science scores, or behavior problems," says Miller.

"That didn't change according to the age of the kids or even how we measured family meals: whether it was three meals a week, five meals a week or nine meals a week didn't seem to matter."

The longitudinal study, to appear in the journal Child Development, was co-authored by researchers at Columbia University and New York University, and draws upon rich data from a nationally representative sample of U.S. children who entered kindergarten in 1998 and were tracked through eighth grade. Using a fixed effects approach, the study controlled for a variety of factors such as parental employment, television-watching, the quality of school facilities, the years of experience the children's teachers had, and other variables that could potentially affect child outcomes.

In the end, the researchers were surprised to find the effects of family meals on test scores and behavioral problems were either small or "effectively zero."

"We would never suggest that families should not eat meals together," Miller says, "the family meal table is an important place for parents and children to interact and communicate. However, it may be that the nature and extent of the influence of family dinners and breakfasts may be different than previously understood."

"Families that believe in the importance of eating together might also do lots of other things they feel are good for their kids, like go to the library or be more invested in picking the right schools," says Miller. "But if you just look at the frequency of family meals, that may seem to be causing positive results."

The study is part of a growing body of literature questioning the nature and extent of the impact of family meals. Future research is necessary to determine whether family meals are related to different outcomes or might impact academics or behavior for older children.

The effects of adult male cohabitation with infant female guinea pigs weaned at 2 days or 4 days of age on the onset of puberty were investigated. The females weaned at 4 days had no growth abnormalities, while 2 of 20 females weaned at 2 days died due to developmental abnormalities. Cohabitation with an adult male significantly advanced the day of vaginal opening in the females weaned at 4 days. During the first vaginal opening, 4 of 9 and 7 of 10 females with male cohabitants in the groups weaned at 2 and 4 days old, respectively, copulated, became pregnant and delivered normally. These results indicated that advancement of female puberty was produced by continuous exposure to an adult male even in infant female guinea pigs weaned at 4 days. INTRODUCTION Social stimuli that operate primarily through olfactory mechanisms, including presence of males, influence reproductive biology in mice [1- 4]. Similar sensory mechanisms are undoubtedly involved in modifying animal reproduction. Pre- vious reports have shown that the presence of an adult male accelerates the sexual maturation of female mice [1, 2, 5-9], rats [3], pigs [10] and human beings [11]. In guinea pigs, our previous work [12] indicated that a similar advancement in puberty was caused by adult male cohabitation from the day of normal weaning (1 or 2 weeks of Accepted February 15, 1988 Received October 28, 1987 age). It is known that newborn babies of guinea pigs are well-developed compared with other rodents, i.e., the babies have a fully developed coat, walk immediately and eat food; their teeth are useful and their eyes are open. Thus, it seems possible that social stimuli can play a useful role in infant guinea pigs weaned earlier than normal. The present study, therefore, was designed to investigate the influence of continuous exposure to an adult male on the onset of female sexual maturation in infant female guinea pigs weaned early. MATERIALS AND METHODS Albino guinea pigs of the Hartley strain were used. They were kept in a controlled semi-barrier system room with a temperature of 22?2?C, a photoperiod of 14 hr light/10 hr dark (lights on from 05:00 to 19:00hr) and ventilation 12 times an hour. The females were housed individually, either alone or with an adult male cohabitant in an aluminum cage (260Wx400Dx200H mm), and given commercial pellets (GB-1, Funabashi Farm Inc.) and tap water ad libitum. Infant female guinea pigs were weaned at the age of 2 days (group A) and 4 days (group B). Each group was then divided into two subgroups. One subgroup of females was continuously ex- posed to an adult male (5 to 12 months old) with proven fertility from the time of weaning until the

Your body doesn't lie: People ignore political ads of candidates they oppose

ScienceDaily (Sep. 17, 2012) ? A recent study examined people's bodily responses while watching presidential campaign ads -- and discovered another way that people avoid political information that challenges their beliefs.

In the last days of the 2008 campaign, researchers had people watch a variety of actual ads for Republican presidential candidate John McCain and his Democratic rival Barack Obama while the viewers' heart rates, skin conductance and activation of facial muscles were monitored.

The results showed that partisan participants reacted strongly to ads featuring their favored candidate, but barely responded to ads featuring the rival candidate.

In comparison, people who didn't favor one candidate over the other showed similar physiological response patterns and intensity to ads for both Obama and McCain.

This suggests that partisan participants weren't really paying attention to the ads featuring the candidate they opposed even as they watched them, said Zheng Wang, lead author of the study and assistant professor of communication at Ohio State University.

"If people are exposed to information in ads regarding a candidate they oppose, they respond by basically tuning out," Wang said.

"A lot of research has shown that, behaviorally, we tend to selectively expose ourselves to information that reinforces our existing opinions. But this study further suggests that even when exposed to information, our attention to what is presented is highly selective, as well," she said.

Wang co-authored the study with Alyssa Morey, a graduate student in communication at Ohio State, and Jatin Srivastava, an assistant professor at Ohio University. Their results appear in a recent issue of the journal Communication Research.

The study involved 15 college students who came to Wang's laboratory in October 2008. They were hooked up with electrodes that measured four physiological responses: heart rate, skin conductance (a way to measure sweating, which is related to how stimulated and alert the person is), and muscle movements around the cheekbone and around the eyebrows.

Research has shown that these physiological responses, taken together, indicate emotional responses and attention levels, Wang said.

While hooked up to the electrodes, each participant watched 12 campaign ads -- six for Obama and six for McCain -- while their physiological reactions were recorded.

After watching the ads, the students filled out measures of how positively and negatively they regarded Obama and McCain in general.

The physiological measures used in the study revealed how much the viewers were paying attention and how they were reacting emotionally to ad content that was positive, negative, more emotionally arousing and less emotionally arousing.

For example, a lower heart rate suggests that the viewer is taking in information and paying more attention to the ad, while a higher heart rate suggests the viewer is not focused on the ads. The muscles in the face also indicate how much attentional effort a person is making.

In one key analysis of the study, the researchers used what they called a dynamical feedback model to see how the different ad factors interacted with the viewers' partisan leanings to influence their physiological reactions over time.

"At any one time, ad viewers' reactions are affected not just by what they are seeing at that exact moment, but also by what came before in the ad," Wang said. "The dynamical feedback model puts it all together to see how people react in a real-time, real-world way."

For supporters of a particular candidate, the feedback model suggests that the positive feelings that viewers have are amplified as they watch an ad for their candidate, Wang said. But for opponents, the feedback effects actually seem to decrease their response over time as they watch the ad -- in essence, they tune out, she said.

"When we integrate all of the ad message inputs into this dynamical system of the viewer's mind, we find the response of supporters is intensified, while the opponents become nonresponsive," she said.

The results also suggest that it isn't easy to predict how simple ad categories -- such as positive ads versus negative ones -- will affect viewers.

"The ad message is only part of the story because it interacts with how individuals process the ad," she said.

"In addition, one negative ad is very different from another negative ad, in terms of their content dynamics and how people react over time. And a 60-second version of an ad can have quite different effects from a 30-second version of the same ad. How people react to ads is a very complex and dynamic process."

The study was partially supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation.

Chicago teachers strike: Why Rahm Emanuel's court gambit may backfire

By turning to the courts to try to end the Chicago teachers strike, now in its second week, Mayor Rahm Emanuel is taking a calculated risk that the public will be on his side and that the move won't actually slow the resolution of the city's battle with the union.

The soonest the courts will take up the matter, however, is Wednesday, according to Cook County Circuit Court Judge Peter Flynn, who on Monday afternoon denied an immediate hearing of the city's request for a preliminary injunction that would end the strike immediately. That means students attending Chicago Public Schools are certain to be out of school Tuesday and perhaps longer.

The Chicago Public Schools, under the directive of Mayor Emanuel, had filed a complaint earlier Monday asking the court for a temporary restraining order and for the injunction, on the grounds that the strike is illegal under state law and presents ?a clear and present danger to public health and safety,? according to court documents.

RECOMMENDED: Obama vs. Romney 101: 5 differences on education

The Chicago Teachers Union released a statement Monday that described Emanuel?s actions as ?vindictive? and an ?attempt to thwart our democratic process.?

The court strategy could backfire by aggravating the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU), whose delegates are currently considering the terms of a tentative contract.

?Both sides are in the middle of negotiations, where you are building a relationship of trust. What the mayor is trying to do is put his thumb on the scale ? he?s moving a little too quickly," says Randolph McLaughlin, a labor lawyer and a professor at Pace University Law School in White Plains, N.Y. "If there is a division within the union that sees this as a heavy-handed tactic, it may push the union to a more aggressive position by continuing to strike, and that?s not very helpful.?

Emanuel has long had the option to ask the the court to intervene and end the strike, but he paused in the hope of settling the contract dispute at the negotiating table, say labor analysts. One likely reason for the pause was political: Media coverage of teachers being forced back to the classroom, or facing fines or jail time, would not help President Obama, Emanuel's former boss, for the November election.

But that changed late Sunday, when the teachers' union announced it had decided to extend the strike at least two more days to give delegates more time to review a contract agreement reached late Friday.

The announcement came as a surprise. Union leaders and Chicago Public Schools officials released statements over the weekend that children would most likely be back in school Monday. According to both sides, language in the contract just needed to be finalized over the weekend, resulting in a House of Delegates vote late Sunday afternoon.

That didn?t happen. Media accounts suggest internal strife within certain union factions. At a rally Monday, union president Karen Lewis said she was ?tired of the lies and name-calling and vilification of the people who do the work every single day to make the difference in our children in Chicago?s lives.?

Emanuel released a statement Sunday that explained he would now turn to the courts, saying he ?will not stand by while the children of Chicago are played as pawns in an internal dispute within a union.? He added that the union should allow school to proceed while it works out the details in formalizing the contract. He said he was taking the legal step so that children would not be in danger of falling further behind in their studies, a theme Emanuel has emphasized since the strike began Sept. 9.

Which direction the court will take regarding the school district's complaint will depend on its interpretation of what the strike is about. Emanuel says the strike is illegal because the Illinois Labor Relations Act says unions can strike over policy matters affecting wages and benefits, but that this strike is essentially about teacher evaluations, layoff and recall policies, and the length of the school day and year. Union representatives acknowledge that wages are not the primary issue in the strike but say economic issues are connected to their frustrations over hiring policies and evaluations.

The contract agreement reached Friday provides teachers with a base salary raise of 3 percent in the first year and 2 percent in each of the next two years. If the contract is extended a fourth year, teachers would receive a 3 percent raise. Teachers are eligible for raises for their years of experience and master?s degrees. The Chicago Public Schools says raises would be 17.6 percent on average over four years.

The maximum salary for a Chicago Public Schools teacher under the current contract is $92,227. That is 19 percent higher than the average maximum salary ? $77,531 ? for a teacher in the 50 largest school districts in the US, according to the National Council on Teacher Quality, a nonprofit think tank based in Washington.

For the court to grant an injunction barring the strike, the school district must prove that ?the issues of economics are resolvable ? so even though there are economic issues out there, they are not significant and the union is using the strike to get noneconomic gains,? says John Hancock, a Detroit-based lawyer who specializes in employment law.

Mr. Hancock, who has represented several Michigan school districts over 30 years, says he expects Judge Flynn to force both sides back to the table to negotiate around the clock for a resolution. As it stands, the Chicago school district may have a difficult time proving that every economic issue is resolved, he says.

?That?s going to be a tough burden if they have not resolved all the wages. The fact is, [both sides are] close, but the union has the right to strike over a nickel,? says Hancock.

The union decision to prolong the strike keeps families in limbo concerning when their children will return to school. Many parents support the teachers but are frustrated that they know little about the remaining sticking points.

Some parents are also not happy about being caught off guard by the strike's timing. The original strike announcement came at 10 p.m. on a Sunday, which meant parents were scrambling early Monday morning to make alternative care arrangements for their children. This weekend?s announcement came earlier Sunday, but after two days in which both sides had signaled that an end of the strike was imminent.

?I?m finding myself divided. We have really great teachers at my sons? school, and I want them to have a fair contact,? says Garvey Madden, a father of two boys in the third and first grades at O.A. Thorp Scholastic Academy.

Mr. Madden was ?very disappointed the kids weren?t back in school? Monday but says it?s worth it if it means there won?t be a rebound strike later in the school year. ?I want them to get it right the first time because I don?t want them to go back to school and then have a strike later in the month if the union does not accept the contract,? he says.

He says his sons are getting bored not being in school, which had started the week before the union declared a strike.

?If they clear it up in the next two days, that?s fine. If [the strike] goes longer than that, it?s pushing it,? he says.

Is it possible to stop loving someone you once truly loved?

The topic I am writing on today is up for debate and I am sure many of my readers views might be different from mine.?? Some people believe that if you love someone you will continue to love that person no matter what and if you stop loving that person it means that you never truly loved them in the first place. The problem I have with this?scenario?is that it seems a bit one-sided. ?The first question that comes to mind is what if that person you love don?t love you as much as you love him or her. ?Even then that is not the real issue; what if the one you that love is constantly abusing you, physically and emotionally? ?Isn?t there a possibility that at some point in time you might stop loving that person? ?Some people will contend that you should still love the person but not the behavior but seriously how are you going to?separate?the two?

Love is an emotion and emotions do not necessarily remain constant except in a fairy tale world. ?People and situations change and while in some cases couples are able to remain in love for a life time in a lot of other cases relationships just fail to work out. ?That does not necessarily mean that a couple did not love each other?initially. ?As we grow older we evolve and our needs and expectations change and if both parties are not in touch with each other needs the relationship can disintegrate. ?There are times when dreams, hopes and expectations do not materialize and couples become disillusioned and bitter and blame each other, this? can destroy a relationship.

There is a high rate of divorce cases and many relationships fall apart over time but this does not mean that people might not have felt what they thought was true love for each other at some point in the relationship.? If a relationship doesn?t work out does it mean what both parties never truly loved each other??? What do you think?

    Frost Nixon (2008): Retrospective

The clip retrospective from Frost Nixon (2008) with Sam Rockwell You know, the first and greatest sin or deception of television is that it simplifies, it diminishes, great, complex ideas, tranches of time. Whole careers become reduced to a single snapshot. At first, I couldn't understand why Bob Zelnick was quite as euphoric as he was after the interviews, or why John Birt felt moved to strip naked and rush into the ocean to celebrate. But that was before I really understood the reductive power of the close-up. Because David had succeeded on that final day in getting, for a fleeting moment, what no investigative journalist, no state prosecutor, no judiciary committee or political enemy had managed to get. Richard Nixon's face, swollen and ravaged by loneliness, self-loathing and defeat. The rest of the project and its failings would not only be forgotten, they would totally cease to exist.
