Cat are territorial. And may do anything to reclaim their lost territory. This story illustrates this fact. Holly, a 4-year old??tortoiseshell became separated in nearly November from Jacob and Bonnie Richter, and traveled 200 miles to return to her home town. She turned up nearby on New Year's Eve.?Holly fled while the Richters were on vacation in Daytona Beach, FL. Two months later, a family not far from the Richters? home in West Palm Beach found her, weak and thin, in their yard.
What we know is that some cats will do anything to return to their home. What we don't know is how they do it. Holly found her way, and traveled about 200 miles - and without a GPS system. Well, or not. Do cats have some sort of GPS in their heads? Maybe....or are they following the earth's magnetic pull? ?Who knows?
Some cats might not have tried to return home. Why? Does territory not mean as much to them? Is there a genetic component, perhaps? Again, no one has any idea.?Holly hardly seemed an adventurous wanderer, though her background might have given her a genetic advantage. Her mother was a feral cat roaming the Richters? mobile home park, and Holly was born inside somebody?s air-conditioner.
What's amazing is that Holly - an indoor only cat her entire life - has enough skills to find food, and also escape from being a meal. Clearly, given her emaciated condition, those meals out in the 'real world' weren't plentiful.
For a few days, Holly first spent time with a neighbor, who was unaware who she was.?They named her Cosette after the orphan in Les Mis?rables. After a veterinary exam, she was checked for a microchip and then reunited with the Richter's. To date, Holly has made to effort to bolt out the door, she's back in good health and seemingly very happy to be home.
