Rhodes College, Stax Museum to present Charles Lloyd Sky Trio

Rhodes College?s Mike Curb Institute for Music and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music will present the Charles Lloyd Sky Trio on March 18. ?

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the McCallum Ballroom of the Bryan Campus Life Center on the Rhodes campus.

Charles Lloyd Sky Trio features internationally renowned jazz saxophonist Charles Lloyd and Eric Harland (drums) and Reuben Rogers (bass).
The Memphis concert celebrates Lloyd?s 75th birthday and the Stax Museum?s 10th Anniversary. Proceeds from the concert support partnership opportunities between the Stax Museum and Rhodes College.

Born in Memphis in 1938, Lloyd began playing saxophone at the age of nine and quickly became a child prodigy. Among his early mentors was Phineas Newborn, and he was classmates at Manassas High with George Coleman, Booker Little, Harold Mabern, and Frank Strozier, who would all go on to become famous professional musicians. As a teenager, Lloyd not only learned from great Memphis musicians, but also played professionally as a sideman with Bobby Blue Bland, B.B. King, Johnny Ace, and Howlin? Wolf. Lloyd left Memphis in the late 1950s, and since the 1960s, he has been one of the most respected jazz musicians in the world.

In April 2012, Lloyd made his first appearance in Memphis since 1964 by performing at Rhodes. He also was honored with a note on the Beale Street Brass Note Walk of Fame

Tickets are $50 for priority seating, $35 for general admission, and can be purchased here. The event is free to Rhodes and Stax Academy students.
