Teachers who use computers in the classroom are often fearful of their students participating in live chatting activities and rightly so, if a teacher is using a tool that isn't designed for educational use the teacher simply can't control the discussion. Students might participate anonymously and use inappropriate language and post offensive content without any recourse from the teacher.
Its no wonder that teachers don't want to include chat rooms into the classroom. Whats really needed is a set of tools that are specifically designed for educational use. The teacher needs to be able to shut down the discussion if things are out of control. The teacher needs to be able to remove content from the discussion quickly and easily. A classroom is supposed to be a safe place to learn, therefore the online tools must also help achieve this.
Once a suitable tool is found, the benefits can be enormous, students who are usually quiet in the classroom often speak up and ask questions. Students can be taught how to behave in an online environment, which is such an important skill for them to have these days. Live chatting is very common in the corporate world, we must teacher our students early on how to conduct a proper online conversation.
The web has a large number of tools and apps that provide open communication, the web is largely designed to be open. As much as we love open tools, we have a responsibly to teach students and often the openness can be harmful to their development. Tools that are closed off or protective but still offer the essence of openness are perfect candidates for teaching students. Tools that can be used to bring outside experts into a discussion yet still give the teacher control are very well suited to teaching online concepts in the classroom.
Social media has transformed the world in the past few years, its very tempting for progressive teachers to bring students directly into twitter conversations. This might be very well for older students, but for younger students its just not the right medium. The younger students are still immature and lack the understanding that their words are being projected across the world.
As online teaching matures over the next few years, look for tools that augment the common tools like Twitter and Facebook into tools that are specifically designed and built for educational use. The need to teach students proper online behaviour is only going to grow.
